This land already knew how to grow this.
Kalo and ʻōlena growing together under breadfruit canopy isn't a new idea for South Kona — it's a documented system, farmed here for centuries, interrupted by invasive growth, and being cleared and farmed again. The goal isn't to keep it small: it's to scale the same system back up, on more land, with more hands, so the people doing the growing are the ones who hold it. This site teaches that same way of growing to anyone who wants to do it: homeowners growing real food on their own land, and restaurants who want ingredients they can trace back to a real grower.

South Kona runs on its own calendar — real seasonal timing for what to plant, watch, and harvest here, not generic advice borrowed from somewhere else. Click any day to see what it says.

How Poi Is Made
Two methods, a Hilo mill that closed in 2017, and what Hawaiʻi's food code says about hand-pounded poi specifically.

Everything above is drawn from a real site — a small restoration project in South Kona, Hawaiʻi, where invasive growth has been cleared by hand and kalo and ʻōlena are growing again, with breadfruit going back in as the canopy above them. The plan is the same one this whole site teaches, just at the scale it takes to matter.
